The Command Post Ep.5: Conversion. Turning Your Website into a 24/7 Sales Asset

Your Website Isn’t a Brochure. It’s Your Best Salesperson, or Your Worst.

Most home service owners treat their website like a flyer someone left on the front desk years ago. It has a logo, a list of services, a few photos, and a phone number buried at the bottom. In Episode 5 of The Command Post, Spartan Digital’s David sits down with new marketing consultant Alexis Conrad to take that idea apart. His point is simple: a website should be built for one thing, and that thing is conversion.

Start With How the Customer Should Feel

A brochure site tells people what you do. A conversion site starts by deciding what the visitor should feel and do by the time they finish reading. Why are they here? Which service do they need? Have you earned enough trust for them to pick up the phone?

David’s long-running check is the “mom test.” His mom was a sharp former state trooper. If she couldn’t understand what a company did from its homepage, neither could the average homeowner or a board reviewing bids.

Activity Doesn’t Equal Performance

Anyone can now generate a website in minutes with AI. The problem is that thousands of other businesses are pulling the same generic copy from the same tools, and it shows.

Just as damaging are “random acts of marketing.” An owner tries a tactic for two weeks, sees nothing, and tears up the whole strategy. Results come from a plan you give time to work.

Fix the Fort Before You Attack

David breaks a business into three parts:

  • The fort: your brand and website.
  • Your defense: your SEO and reputation, including real Google reviews.
  • Your offense: paid ads, outbound, and cold email.

Sending ads to a slow, confusing, or generic site is like pouring water into a leaky bucket. You pay for good leads and hand them a bad experience.

Many businesses don’t have a traffic problem at all. They have a conversion problem. It could sit in the copy, the ads, the call handling, or all three, which is why you need to track what happens before, during, and after every conversion.

Build for Mrs. Jones in a Flooded Basement

Picture a homeowner standing in three feet of water. She won’t open a laptop. She’ll grab her phone, and she’ll leave your site in under 15 seconds if she can’t find what she needs. To keep her:

  • Make the site load in under two seconds.
  • Put a tap-to-call number front and center.
  • Design mobile-first. David estimates 85 to 90 percent of traffic now comes from phones.

If you advertise emergency service, someone has to answer around the clock.

Place reviews or video testimonials right before your contact form, where trust matters most. Use targeted landing pages that speak to one problem for one audience, instead of sending every visitor to a general service page.

Business Goals First, Creative Later

Suppose an owner spends $3,000 a month on Google Ads and gets few qualified leads. That usually comes down to one of two causes:

  • The page isn’t telling the right story.
  • The business can’t handle the extra work and is paying to say no.

That’s why Spartan agrees with each client on what success looks like before any campaign starts, from target call volume to crew capacity.

Three Fixes You Can Make Today

  1. Post real job photos. Use your best recent before-and-after shots of real crews doing real work, with no stock or AI images.
  2. Record a founder video. Use your phone to tell how the business started, and put it on your About page.
  3. Give one clear next step. Every visitor should know what to do next and have an easy way to call you.
