6 Reasons Why Your Competitors Are GettingMore Calls Than You

6 Reasons Why Your Competitors Are GettingMore Calls Than You

When a homeowner in your market needs the home services your company offers, they have several choices.

  1. They can call your team. That’s a WIN!
  2. They can call any one of your competitors. That’s a loss.
  3. Or, they can choose to not take action. Nobody wins.

In your industry and market, your business may be the go-to choice. After all, you built a reputable company. You have years of experience. You have expert technicians. You do quality work. And yes, your customers love the results you provide.

Unfortunately, the reason prospects choose your competitors first may have nothing to do with who provides better service.

Here’s the hard pill to swallow…

Your competitors may simply be winning the online visibility battle.

That’s right. That prospect who may be the perfect fit for your business may notice your competitor first. Or your competitor simply makes a better first impression.

That Would-Be Customer Can’t Hire You If They Can’t Find You

Back in the day, reputation carried businesses. Referrals were 90% of their business.

If a plumbing company did great work for the Miller’s, they told everyone. Word spread. And when Mrs. Miller’s neighbor had a plumbing emergency, she called that same plumbing company.

Today is a whole different world. First, everyone is incredibly busy. Second, neighbors don’t talk to each other as much, and don’t often pass along referrals. And third and most important, everything is done online.

Here’s what finding a plumber looks like in 2026:

A homeowner’s water heater goes out. Not having a clue who to call, he picks up his phone and searches “Water heater repair near me.”

Google offers several options.

Yet, one of your competitors leaps off the screen. First, they appear prominently in the Local Pack. Second, their Google Business Profile has hundreds of glowing reviews. Third, a quick click to their website reveals everything the homeowner is looking for. And a bonus, there’s a big CALL NOW button.

Now, your home services business may provide a far better service. A quicker response. Even a better price. But, in 2026 and beyond, it’s your presence online that drives the calls.

And if you are buried on page two or your Google Business Profile isn’t competitive, you may never get a chance to prove you’re better.

Yes, being good at what you do is important. But, being easy to find is equally important today.

6 Ways to Learn From Your Competitors

In today’s competitive battlefield, home services business owners’ knee-jerk reactions are to throw more money at marketing.

“I’ll invest more in Google Ads.”
“Let’s build a whole new website.”
“I’m ready to hire an SEO expert.”

While investing in marketing can work, it’s a smarter tactic to know WHERE to invest your time or money.

And instead of guessing, you can simply follow the clues left by your competitors.

Think of it as a reconnaissance mission. Your job is to dissect where your main competitors are showing up online and what they are doing better than you.

To know where and how to improve your marketing, here are the 6 pieces of intelligence you must gather:

  1. Are Your Competitors Showing Up Where Your Customers Are Searching?

Search visibility is one of the most important tactics to investigate. Just keep in mind that today’s online searches offer multiple levels of search.

Think of your customers’ most likely searches. Something like:

  • “HVAC company near me”
  • “Landscaper in [city]”
  • “Roofing company near me”
  • “Emergency plumber in [city]”
  • “Water damage restoration near me”

Consider this an exercise. Don’t just read this blog, go to Google and type in how your customer would search for home services like yours.

Now, you want to look at two things:

  • Where does your company appear?
  • Where do your competitors appear?

It’s important you look at every level of search available:

  • Do you or your competitors appear high in the organic search results?
  • Where do you and your competition appear on Google Maps?
  • Now, look at the Local Pack. Are you there?
  • Are you or your competitors found in Google Ads?
  • What about Google’s AI-generated results?

If you only see your company’s name once or far down the list, you’re practically invisible. And if you notice the same competitor appearing on multiple methods of search, they’re gaining far more visibility. Naturally, that leads to more phone calls, quotes, bookings, and revenue.

  1. What Does Your Competitor’s Google Business Profile Look Like?

When your prospects are searching for a home services business like yours, they are rarely scrolling through the organic listings. Rather, they tend to focus on what Google puts front and center:

Google Business Profiles.

That’s because your prospects receive just about everything they need to make a decision about which home services business to choose… all in a couple of seconds.

So, what type of first impression are you making compared with your competitors?

Compare your profiles:

  • Does your main competitor have a lot more reviews than you?
  • Are their reviews recent? Are yours?
  • Do they regularly add photos to their Google Business Profile? Do you?
  • Are their business descriptions optimized?
  • Are their services clearly listed?
  • Do they appear more prominently in Maps for important services?

Be honest with yourself. If you were a homeowner, would you be more likely to visit your competitor’s website and call their phone number or consider your company?

  1. How Do Their Reviews Compare To Yours?

You’ve been told for years just how important your Google Reviews are. However, too many home services businesses wrongly focus on the quantity of reviews and not the quality of reviews.

Having 100 five-star reviews that simply feature the rating and absolutely no description may not be the win you think it is.

That’s because in this day and age, it reeks of foul play. Whether true or not, when prospects see lots of reviews with little or no substance, they believe those reviews were bought and paid for.

Today, people not only scan for the totality of reviews, but also the content. If you browse through your competitors’ Google Reviews and see comments such as the following, just know they are providing a solid service.

  • “Fast response.”
  • “Professional technician.”
  • “Showed up on time.”
  • “Great communication.”
  • “Fair price.”
  • “Fixed the problem that day.”

Beyond words of appreciation, those words become powerful marketing tactics that drive new customers right to them. In fact, it may be one of the best free sources of advertising you’ll ever have.

Spend a couple hours pulling out the most common words and expressions of gratitude found within your competitors’ reviews. Focus on what matters most to the customers. The words in those reviews can become a marching order for how to do better business.

Then, take a look at your own reviews. Do your customers offer the same level of appreciation? Do they highlight your communication, punctuality, expertise, response, professionalism, and pricing?

If not, it may be time to revisit the level of service you’re providing to your customers.

  1. What Do Your Competitors’ Websites Offer?

While a Google Business Profile listing provides a phone number, many prospects will want to learn more about the home services business.

So, they click to their website. And this is where competitive reconnaissance gets interesting.

Again, put yourself in the shoes of the homeowner. Visit their website as if they would for the first time.

Because the homeowner is probably juggling a couple of different priorities, assume they have little time. And ask yourself:

  • Can you immediately tell what they do?
  • Is it clear what areas they serve?
  • Is their phone number in the header on every page?
  • Are their services prominent and clear?
  • Do they have strong calls-to-action?
  • Does the website build trust?
  • Are there credibility enhancers, such as testimonials, case studies, certifications, guarantees, and a portfolio of projects?

They could have the world’s most beautiful or coolest website. But, if it doesn’t clearly communicate and sell, it won’t convert.

Now, after digging into your competitors’ websites, it’s time to take a cold, hard look at your own.

  1. How Fast Are Your Competitors Responding to Leads?

Lead leakage is real. In fact, we recently published a blog post revealing how home services businesses leak leads and how to fix that widespread problem. You can read it here.

Getting a lot of leads is great. However, responding slowly to most leads is one reason for lead leakage.

You win the search. Win the click. Even win the phone call or form fill.

But, if you’re slow out of the gate to respond or give your prospect a price quote, they may run to your competition.

So, take an honest look at how you’re responding to every lead. This may involve working with your sales team, fulfillment team, and technicians.

But, ultimately, you want to find out:

  • How quickly are you responding?
  • Who is responding?
  • How many attempts are made?
  • Are leads receiving text messages?
  • Are estimates followed up?
  • Are missed calls returned quickly?

Remember, it’s not the number of inquiries or phone calls that’s most important. It’s how many of them convert to actual quotes, jobs, and revenue.

  1. Are Your Competitors More Consistent Than Your Team?

Perhaps Aristotle offered the most succinct and accurate quote about the importance of consistency. He said, “We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.”

Are YOU making consistency a habit?

Too many home services businesses treat marketing tactics like new, shiny objects. They try their hand at social media for a couple months, then move on. They try Google Ads for a month, then move on. They try email campaigns, SEO, and review generation. Few results, and they move on.

Yet, if you’re always seeing your competitors ads, new reviews, high rankings, and a strong social media presence, they are winning the consistency game.

Meanwhile, while you may hop from one marketing move to another, (and losing a good chunk of your online visibility), they’re always there.
